Welcome to Teddington RFC. We are a successful, inclusive rugby club, run for and by the people of Teddington, Middlesex and surrounding areas.
We are based in Bushy Park, hence the "Antlers" cry of our supporters, and run a range of men's, women's, junior and minis sides. Throughout the Club you will find common themes: -
- We believe rugby is about fun, camaraderie and, of course winning. So we train for fun and play games to win.
- We believe in including everyone who can and wants to contribute to the club.
- We are focussed on the community in which we are based and have a substantial schools coaching programme.
- At juniors and mini levels we are very family orientated and teach rugby in a safe, secure environment.
- Our coaching is first class and our style of play is consistently open attacking rugby that's good to watch and good to play.
- We are ambitious to improve and have made considerable progress in the last 2 years regarding promotion, infrastructure and coaching appointments. The goal of the Youth section is to be the standard against which other Youth sections judge themselves.
We run three competitive Men’s teams every week and an occasional vets team. In 2007/08 the newly promoted first team is playing in Surrey League 2. And our 2nd and 3rd teams will be playing league rugby in the Surrey County merit leagues. The Ladies teams, which have produced 7 internationals, are part of National Challenge 2, and in the Youth Section we have sides from under 6 to Colts (U19). The U9s are Joint National Champions, the U10s runners up and the U11s Plate Winners. The Junior sides compete in Middlesex Herts League Division 1. Club History
The club's origins can be found at the White Hart pub at Hampton Wick, where the club's forebears were the Old Masonians RFC, the pitches being in Home Park.
In 1966 the Old Masonians RFC joined forces with a break-away group from the Decca RFC, and formed a new club, which they called the Antlers RFC. The name was changed in 1981 to Antlers-Teddington RFC, and it was only in 1998 that the club decided that it would be best to formally change the name to the club that we now know as Teddington RFC.
The club moved out of the White Hart in 1969, when an opportunity came to become tenants of the Teddington Town Cricket Club in Bushy Park. This arrangement was rudely interrupted in 1972 when the club house was destroyed by fire. However the club house was rebuilt under the auspices of the newly formed Teddington Town Sports Club, of which the cricket and rugby clubs were equal partners. The club slowly progressed and eventually managed to acquire two pitches adjacent to the club house.
The club had some very successful years in the 1970's, the highpoint being a run to the Middlesex Cup quarter-finals, where they met Wasps, not something that is likely to be repeated! A new era was reached in 1987 with the formation of league rugby, which found us in the Middlesex League 2. In 1992 we reached our high-point of league rugby when we got promotion to the Herts-Middlesex League 1, the equivalent of today's London League 4. In 1997 we took the opportunity of transferring to the Surrey Leagues, where we have remained ever since. In 1987 a milestone for the club was reached with the formation of the Ladies XV, which has been an important asset for the club.
The last major change in the club's history being in 1996 when we welcomed Mini Rugby to Bushy Park, with the formation of the Teddington RFC Mini section. In the ten years to 2006 the Minis have grown to approx 450 players and many have gone on to be Junior players with the Club. The end of the 2005/6 season saw probably the most important milestone of all reached when one of the original Minis played for the first team, establishing the precedent and realizing the vision established when the Minis were first formed.
